make me pretty – basement cabinet dressed up for our living room

January 2, 2014

One of our good friends was getting ready to sell her house and had some furniture to get rid of. This adorable cabinet had been living in her basement storing paint and other home repair supplies. I decided to fix her up and put her in our living room. I made some shelves for the bottom to store toys and the top would be perfect for the pretty, breakable things I am too afraid to leave out around the kids.

I scraped the old paint off the glass doors and gave her a new paint job, inside and out. Then I cut some cardboard panels to fit between the top shelves on the back and covered them with fabric. This way when I get bored, which won’t take more than a couple years, I can pop them out and change the fabric. Or I could cover them with wall paper.

make me pretty – girly cabinet

September 9, 2013

My husband occasionally picks up a piece of furniture for me. This cabinet he found at a yard sale and it sat in our garage for at least a year because I couldn’t decide what to do with it. Then I stumbled upon some pretty wrapping paper and my problem was solved.

I painted the outside of the cabinet with old white chalk paint and the inside is a pale gray. I decoupaged the front panels of the doors with wrapping paper and painted the hardware to match the new drawer pulls I put on.

I think it was originally a TV cabinet but if you added a hanging rod inside I think it would be perfect in a girls room.

make me pretty – the happy cabinet

December 7, 2011

I came across this cabinet in the alley while I was taking my kids for a walk. It was kind of heartbreaking seeing it in the trash considering someone had hand painted the door. (I also get kind of upset when I see peoples artwork at the thrift store.) Of course, light houses aren’t really my thing but I could at least save the cabinet.

I had to bribe Jasper to get him to give up his seat in the stroller so I could roll the cabinet home but I just can’t pass up free solid wood furniture.

At first I thought I would do a stencil on the door but then I remembered some Lotta Jansdotter paper place mats my friend Corbin had given me. I could cut one for the middle panel and I already had some yellow paint that would match perfectly!

make me pretty – english country cottage cabinet

April 28, 2010

I’m afraid my mind and body were temporarily taken over by the spirit of a woman who lives in a quaint cottage in the English countryside. I don’t really know how else to explain this next piece because it’s not really my style. It’s almost shaby chic, which I do love – the more distressed the better. But the floral fabric takes it into farm house/cottage land which is not a place I usually visit. I am more thrift store chic – a little modern, a little junky, sometimes pretty, sometimes funky. But I do really love the way this cabinet turned out.

Here is the before:

And just because he hasn’t made an appearance here in a while – here is my Jasper D!
