make me pretty – milk paint

August 14, 2014

Since I taught a class all about milk and chalk paint this past weekend at the Visual Arts Center this past weekend I thought I should do a post about milk paint. If you have never used it you might want to give it a try. It has some similarities to chalk paint (no sanding or priming – wax finish) but it is sort of opposite in it’s consistency. It’s watery to milk paints creamy. And it doesn’t really cover completely (unless you add a special solution to your first coat.)

I used Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint in Boxwood on this table and stained the top. I finished with a coat of Annie Sloan clear wax.

Milk paint usually comes in a powder that you mix yourself with equal part water. It only lasts for about a week once it is mixed – make sure you store it in the fridge.

If you would like to make this table your own go to Orange!

make me pretty – the throne

March 27, 2014

This chair was a freebie from a friend who was getting ready to move. It is a strong, heavy chair that makes me think of  a throne. It just needs to find it’s king, or queen. I started by tearing out the old leather seat and making a pattern to cut a piece of wood for a new seat base. I sanded the chair, painted it, put on an antique glaze and made a new seat cushion.

make me pretty – a boring coffee table makeover

February 12, 2014

This coffee table really didn’t have a lot going for it. Pretty boring design. Pretty boring color. But it is solid wood and sturdy and I like a challenge!

I forgot to take a before picture so you will have to use your imagination but it was your basic reddish brown stained table.

I painted her cream and used a new stencil on the top. Then I finished her off with a couple of coats if polyurethane to protect my careful paint job.

It’s at Orange in Carytown if your interested!

make me pretty – the perfect candidate for chalk paint

October 4, 2013

People moving is always a good thing for me. When my neighbor was on he his way out of town he let me come over and pick through the stuff he was going to leave behind. I couldn’t pass by this crazy carved table. A little ornate for my personal style but how fun would she be to paint? But not so fun to sand so I decided to just skip that step and use some chalk paint. I took Emerson with me and he helped me pick out this pretty blue. I had originally planned to add the dark wax but I liked how it turned out with just the clear wax after I distressed it.

make me pretty – curvy chair

September 18, 2013

This chair got stuck in my garage. Hidden behind the bins of kids clothes and furniture projects waiting for my attention. I had even bought the fabric for it – like, a year ago. Anyway, I pulled her out, dusted her off and got to work.

I fell in love with the curvy lines of this chair – the shiny black finish and boring fabric, not so much. I painted it cream and distressed it very lightly. I just wanted to really accentuate the curves. Then I re-covered the seat with super pretty floral fabric. I love the colors!

Now she is at Orange in Carytown.

orange in carytown – super cute furniture and housewares by local artists

June 6, 2013

There is a new store in Carytown that you should check out if you are in RVA. It is super cute. The kind of store I love to shop in so I knew it would be a great place to sell my furniture and switch plate covers. It’s Orange and its right next door to World of Mirth.
