make me pretty – mid century modern bench

November 4, 2011

This bench was a super steal at Fantastik thrift. It probably had something to do with the wild bird velvet fabric but this is one of those times where you have to use your imagination. The shape of the bench is super cute and it is incredibly sturdy – it just needs some new fabric and a little love!

So my first stop was my favorite fabric store, u-fab, where I fell in love with this graphic flower fabric. I somehow managed to re-do this bench with only one yard but I was cutting it pretty close. I took the bench apart and used the old fabric cover as my pattern. The tricky part for me were the buttons. I have no idea how you are suppose to attach them but I covered the bench then used a crazy homemade contraption to pierce the fabric. I taped a piece of kitchen twine on the end of sharp wood kitchen skewer and it ended up working perfectly!

Here is the finished bench. Jasper said he really wants us to keep this one but I know it wouldn’t last a week in my house with the kids. So I hope I can find it a new happy home!

make me pretty – stickers as stencils

October 21, 2011

So I learned a new trick. I don’t know why I didn’t think of it before but it took a TV show to tell me about it. Instead of using plastic stencil sheets use stickers! Or even wall decals. You put it on, paint over it and peel it off and your done. I decided to keep the wood grain under my sticker but you could paint one color, put on the sticker and then paint over another color.

Here is my table before:

I put a sticker on the table top and shelf. Marshall’s has a great selection of cheap craft supplies lately, too, by the way. Lots of stickers, stamps, and some Martha Stewart stuff.

I painted my table a pale green and then took off the stickers. I lightly distressed the edges and then covered the whole thing with a layer of stain. Here she is:

Make sure you rub your sticker on really good. I thought I had but a little bit of the paint still got underneath.

make me pretty – a curvy little chair

April 7, 2011

This is one of my favorite chairs I have re-done. I can’t believed I stumbled upon this curvy beauty at the thrift store. It was on the top shelf, and I had the baby strapped to me, but I had to have it! The thrift store employees were nice enough to not only get it down for me but also walk it to my car and wedge it in the front seat! People are so nice when you have a baby with you!

Anyway, I am not a huge fan of dark wood (have you noticed that yet?) So I decided to lighten it up with my favorite cream paint and a beautiful blue fabric that feels sort of Asian-y to me.

Here is the before:

And after:

This is one of those projects that I have to seriously consider keeping but I bet you will see it turn up for sale somewhere soon!
